Lactation Consultation

I provide support and assistance with initial breastfeeding and infant feeding through returning to work and weaning. Below are specific areas of concern where I can help you.

  • Latch and Position

  • Colostrum phase

  • Cup/spoon feeding

  • Engorgement

  • Increase in milk volume

  • Breast refusal

  • Bottle refusal

  • Sore and painful nipples

  • Blocked/clogged milk ducts

  • Mastitis

  • Pumping

  • Hand Expression

  • Increasing milk supply

  • Oversupply and fast flow

I approach the lactation consultation three ways:

1. Problem-solving:

I put on my investigative hat to learn what’s happening to cause you pain, discomfort or worry. Maybe your baby seems a little bit unsettled or unhappy, maybe it’s nipple or breast pain, or maybe your baby seems really unsettled?

We discuss your medical & lifestyle history and complete a physical assessment of your breasts and your baby.

I may observe a feeding and ask you lots more questions.

Together we discuss, problem-solve and create an action plan for you and your family. You have the next steps mapped out to get you and your baby reaching your goal.

2. Support:

You just need to know you’re doing the right thing!

Breastfeeding problem or not: we will discuss any concerns and questions you have. Is it okay to drink or take a specific medication? I’ve got your back and want you feeling healthy and normal again.

3. Communication:

As a trained social worker, I understand family dynamics. A new baby sometimes brings up lots of family tension. As a professional I provide resources and educational information to ease conflict around breastfeeding. When you hear, ”that’s not the way I did it,” you will have the words to respond. This is your experience.

A detailed written plan will be provided to you and important information forwarded to your baby’s pediatrician or primary healthcare provider at no additional charge.

Email support is provided for two weeks after the appointment. After two weeks, a new consultation may be added.
